Every card

Brief

Starting point:

Opening a door for a defined group of people has so far meant handing out badges, keys or codes — and administering them afterwards. Every card issued has to be registered, replaced and eventually collected again. In retail there is a further catch: access solutions often assume a network connection that simply is not there on site.

Objective:

What was needed was an access system that:

  • uses the card customers already carry,
  • drives sliding doors and electric locks directly,
  • decides without a cloud and without a network connection,
  • and installs without running a cable between reader and controller.

How it works

Present the card

Any 13.56 MHz medium will do: credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, SwissPass or an existing loyalty card. The operator defines what counts as a key — nothing has to be issued for it.

The reader classifies

The reader recognises the standard, checks authorisation locally and decides within milliseconds. This happens inside the device, without a detour via a cloud — and therefore also when there is no network available on site.

Encrypted radio bridge

Transmission between reader and controller runs over Hybrid-Sphere: 512-bit encrypted, with replay protection, across distances of up to ten kilometres. No cable has to be pulled between door and controller, which greatly simplifies retrofitting existing buildings.

The door opens

Four analogue potential-free outputs and eight digital interfaces drive the motor, lock or turnstile directly. As soon as a Wi-Fi connection is available, opening hours, admitted media, roles and access attempts can additionally be managed through a management portal.

Result

On the outside of the sliding door sits a box the size of a palm — that is all it takes. Whoever is allowed in holds their card in front of it, and the door opens. No badge handover, no key administration, no card logistics. Because the reader decides locally and the radio bridge reaches the controller without a cable, the system can be retrofitted even where there is neither a network nor a conduit. For operations that means access around the clock, without anyone having to be on site.
